Morning. Labour Day weekend is here, one last blast of summer with fall fair season nipping at its heels. This issue has both.
This week's Buzz is brought to you by Stay Grey Bruce. Cottages, cabins and inns all over Grey and Bruce, every one booked direct with the owner, so the price you see is the price you pay.
Inside: a menu with a section called "From the Meat Locker", 45,000 apple trees with the gate finally open, square dancing tractors headed for Walkerton, and a shepherd named Hunter hoping for a quieter couch.
Let's get into it.

Top 3 this week
Here are our 3 favourite events happening this week

Labour Day weekend, and Grey-Bruce is not going quietly. A night market in a brewery yard, a fair that's been running since 1851, and fireworks over the water in Port Elgin.
Neustadt Night Markt β Friday, September 4 | 3 PM-8 PM | Neustadt Springs Brewery, Neustadt
For one evening, the grounds at Neustadt Springs Brewery turn into a full-on village market: local vendors, live music, food, and (of course) beer. It's the fourth annual, run by the same community crew whose daytime Markt drew 1,500 people back in June. Come hungry, browse slow, and let golden hour do its thing over the stalls.
175th Kincardine Fall Fair β Saturday, September 5 | 9 AM-4 PM | Connaught Park, Kincardine
Kincardine has been throwing this fair since 1851, and Saturday is number 175. The theme is "Tipping Our Hats to 175!" and the day runs the classics: cattle judging, bale rolling, a petting farm, inflatables, and opening ceremonies at noon. Admission is by donation. Stick around downtown after, because the pipe band marches its final Saturday night parade of the season down Queen Street at 8.
Labour Day Fireworks at the Beach β Sunday, September 6 | 3 PM to dusk | Main Beach, Port Elgin
Summer's closing ceremony. The Chamber takes over Port Elgin Main Beach from 3 with live music from the Greg Ritchie Band and Nuclear Vibes, a Rotary barbecue, ice cream, and vendors along the promenade, then caps the whole season with fireworks at dusk. Free to attend. One last beach night before the school year takes over.
Partner Spotlight

On November 20, a crew of Grey Bruce musicians will walk onto the stage at Walkerton's Victoria Jubilee Hall and play Led Zeppelin IV. The whole album. Front to back. Stairway included.
That's the idea behind Grey Bruce Live, a new concert series from Matt and Logan, a high school music teacher and a radio guy who kept noticing the same thing: this region is full of serious musicians with no big stage to stand on. So they built one. One iconic album per show, performed live by local talent.
Tickets are $30, cash only, fittingly old school. You can grab them at 5 spots across Walkerton and Mildmay, fill list on their website (link below).
And if you want to know what albumβs next before anyone else does, drop your email there too. Thatβs the only place theyβll announce it first.
Full Weekly Calendar
Community Calendar
Our Community Calendar covers Grey & Bruce Counties. It's a large area, so if we missed an event we are sorry, we will do better next time!

445 events across Grey and Bruce this week. Four fall fairs in one weekend, the Salmon Spectacular hands out its cheques Sunday afternoon, and half the region ends the summer on a beach watching fireworks. Plus the usual pile of markets, bandshell concerts and cruise nights in between.
It all lives on the map. Open it, find your town, tap a pin, see what's close. Same events, way less scrolling.
3 more worth getting off the couch for:
166th Durham Fall Fair β Durham, Fri-Sun Sept 4-6. Tractor pulls, a quilt auction, a Saturday parade to the fairgrounds, and a theme of "Pumpkins, Plaids, & Scarecrows!"
169th Meaford Fall Fair β Meaford, Sat Sept 5, 9-5. The exhibition-hall classics done right: prize produce, quilts, and livestock at the fairgrounds and curling club.
Live Harness Racing β Hanover, Sat Sept 5, 1:30 PM. An afternoon of standardbreds thundering around Hanover Raceway.

George's on Harbour - Kincardine

There's a restaurant on Kincardine's harbour with a menu section called "From the Meat Locker" and a sunset you can see from the patio.
That's George's on Harbour. Two patios, an open dining room, and a view straight down Lake Huron at the exact hour the sky does its thing. The kitchen runs two programs at once: Neapolitan-style pizza out of the oven and a dry-aged steak program that takes itself seriously.
Where to start? George's Fries, which the menu itself admits is the most-ordered thing in the building. Four fries stuffed with mashed potato and cheese, with a peppercorn rosemary aioli. Then pick a lane. The 10 oz New York strip dry-aged for 30 days, or a Margherita pizza with fresh basil and bocconcini. Pasta people, the eight-hour bolognese is there for you.
It's upscale cottage, not white tablecloth. Shorts and a sundress are fine. A private room over the water is available if you're plotting something.
Community Bulletin
Hunter is slow to say hi, quick to stay
Hunter is a 6 year old German Shepherd cross at the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter near Meaford. New people make him nervous for a few minutes, then he melts and wants all the attention you've got. He'd love a quieter home, and he gets along with some dogs and even cats. Call 519-372-1911. And yes, big fluffy Kong from last week is still waiting too.
The best-lit house on your street has a secret
It's not a braver ladder. It's The Christmas Light Guys: commercial-grade LEDs cut to fit your roofline, hung for you in November, taken down in January, stored until next year. The quote takes about sixty seconds, and the install calendar fills first come, first served. September is when the smart houses book.
137 local jobs, one page
Job hunting around here used to mean checking ten different sites. greybrucejobs.ca pulls every local posting into one place: 137 openings at last count, across 40+ towns from Owen Sound to Kincardine, healthcare to trades to office. Updated daily, browsable by town, with a weekly email alert if you'd rather the jobs come to you.

Hidden Gem of the week
Oaklane Orchards - Clarksburg

On Grey Road 2 in Clarksburg there are 45,000 apple trees, and as of last Friday, the gate is open.
That's Oaklane Orchards. The orchard has been growing apples here since 1973. In 2018 the Fox and Close families bought it, merged it with the farm next door, and took it from 50 acres to 130. Eighteen apple varieties now, plus pears and plums, all with the Beaver Valley as the backdrop.
Some of the names on the list you know. Honeycrisp, Gala, Ambrosia. Some you probably don't. Tolman Sweet, Northern Spy, Russet. The farm store carries their own sweet cider, pies, jams, and honey, and the first apples of the season are coming in now.
Heads up: u-pick is limited and only runs mid-September into early October, so if picking your own is the plan, it's a short window.
Grab a bag, grab a pie, take the long way home through the valley. Fall's not officially here yet. This is close enough.

Road to the Plowing Match
Square dancing tractors. You read that right.

In a few weeks, a farm field five kilometres west of Walkerton becomes one of the busiest places in Ontario. The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo runs September 22 to 26, and it's a homecoming: this same site hosted the IPM in 1976, fifty years ago.
If you've never been, here's the kind of thing you're in for. Square dancing tractors, twice a day. A combine demolition derby, with heats Friday afternoon and finals Saturday. The Gregg Family Clydesdales rolling through with six and eight-horse hitches. The Great Canadian Lumberjacks three times a day, the Canadian Cowgirls on their trick horses, and a RAM Rodeo running Thursday through Saturday. Plus live music and shows going all day, every day.
Money tip: advance tickets are $20 for adults until September 8, then $25 after. Kids 6 to 15 get in for $5, and a family pack (two adults, two kids) is $40 online. We'll be counting down right here every week until the gates open.
