Good morning! Summerfolk takes over Kelso Beach this weekend, six farms in Georgian Bluffs open their gates for a drive-yourself crawl, and Kincardine parks a tall ship at the pier. Also, we found a diner in Tara worth setting an alarm for.
This issue is brought to you by The Christmas Light Guys. Yes, it's August. But the houses that get their lights hung in November without a fuss belong to the people who grabbed a free quote in August. They bring the commercial-grade LEDs, hang them, take them down in January, and store them so your garage doesn't have to. Sixty-second form, no pressure, and it's a small local crew, so the calendar fills fast.
Let's get into it.

Summerfolk 51 โ Friday-Sunday, August 21-23 | Kelso Beach at Nawash Park, Owen Sound
Fifty-one years in and Owen Sound's folk festival still takes over the bay for a weekend. Six stages, 50-plus performers, 80-some sets: Dan Mangan, Jane Siberry, Julian Taylor, Good Lovelies, Tom Wilson, and yes, the Arrogant Worms. Plus an artisan village, food trucks, and a family village to park the kids. Weekend passes at the gate are $250 for adults, day passes run $140 to $165, and kids 13 and under are free with an adult. Just curious? Thursday night's Coming Home Vol. 2 show at 7:30 is admission by donation.
Georgian Bluffs Farm Crawl โ Saturday, August 22 | 10am-2pm | Six farms across Georgian Bluffs
A self-guided drive between six farms just west of Owen Sound. Lavender at Bluewater Lavender Farm, bison at Snowy Creek, horses at G.R.A.C.E. Riding, candles and fudge at The Candle Barn, sweet corn and eggs at Barn on the Bluffs, jams and frozen pies at Outrange Homestead. Grab a passport (print it or pick one up at any stop), get it punched at three farms, and you're entered to win a basket of local goodies. Free, and the kind of Saturday that ends with a trunk full of stuff you didn't plan on buying.
Kincardine Marine Heritage Day โ Saturday, August 22 | 11am-3pm | Waterfront and North Pier, Kincardine
Eleventh year of Kincardine throwing a party for the lake. Tour the tall ship Playfair, poke around the rescue unit and OPP boats dockside, take the lighthouse tour, and get into the Walker House museum for free (it's open 9 to 4 for the day). Shipwreck exhibits round it out. All of it free. Stick around for the pipe band parade down Queen Street at 8.

Stay Grey Bruce

Here's a local secret nobody in the city seems to know: the best cottage week of the year is the one after Labour Day.
The lake has spent all summer warming up. The crowds go home. Sauble looks like it did in 1975. And the place you couldn't get near in July suddenly has a Saturday open.
Stay Grey Bruce is a curated list of cottages, cabins and inns across Grey and Bruce, booked directly with the people who own them. No booking fees, no middleman. Twenty-six places right now, Tobermory down to Point Clark and over to the Beaver Valley.
For a September weekend it skews small and cozy. Laird Lane in Southampton sleeps four, five minutes from the beach. Dolomite Drift in Dyer's Bay has a hot tub and a wood stove for the first cool night, plus kayaks and paddleboards for the warm afternoon before it. Riversong Suites is a three-suite inn inside an 1881 grocery store in Neustadt. And Whispering Waves in Point Clark comes with a craft room built for hobby groups, which is either your thing or your mother's thing.
Message the owner, work it out like neighbours, then quietly take the week everyone else forgot about.

Country Cousins - Tara

There's a diner in Tara that shuts the grill off at 2 p.m., and people still drive 30 minutes each way for the hashbrowns.
That's Country Cousins, right on Yonge Street. Tara is the town most of us only see through a windshield on the way to Sauble. Which is the whole pitch. Leave 20 minutes early, sit down, hit the beach full instead of hangry.
It's family run in the real sense. The owners are the ones cooking, pouring your coffee, and stopping by to chat. We keep hearing the same word for it: homey.
Two things people order over and over. The eggs benny, which one regular calls the best they've had, full stop. And the hashbrowns, little crispy ones. "No ketchup needed" is a direct quote. Portions are big. Nobody leaves needing a snack.
The coffee is bottomless and there's pie on the dessert board. Nothing on the menu is trying to impress you. It just does.
Heads up: breakfast and lunch only, Wednesday to Sunday, doors close at 2. Sleep in and you'll miss it.
Sauble season has a couple of good weekends left. Make Tara the first stop.

Community Bulletin
Macey is the easy one
Macey is a three year old German shepherd cross at the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter near Meaford. Sweet, friendly, affectionate, good with most dogs. Spayed, vaccinated, ready to go home. Call and book an appointment to meet her.
Didn't book Labour Day in April? There's still a way in.
The campsites you actually want for the long weekend went months ago. But cancellations pile up in the last week or two before arrival, and that's the window CampHound lives in. Pick a park (MacGregor Point, Sauble Falls, Inverhuron, Bruce Peninsula, 33 in all), give it your dates, and it checks every few minutes around the clock. The second a site opens, you get a text with the booking link. $15, once. No account, no subscription, and if nothing ever opens for your dates, your next watch is half price. Same trick works for September, which is quietly the best camping month of the year.
The wage is right on the listing
greybrucejobs.ca pulls 200-plus local openings onto one page, and a lot of them show the pay up front. Right now: a millwright in Owen Sound at $55 to $72 an hour, an RN in Hanover at $45, an RMT in Durham at $40 to $55. Free to browse, weekly email if you want it.
Bulletin spots are a mix of paid placements and community picks. Either way, we write the words.
Hidden Gem of the week
Sideroad Farm - Walter's Falls

Just outside Walter's Falls, on a sideroad that is literally the address, there's a 60-acre farm where a llama named Cusco is on the payroll.
That's Sideroad Farm. Patrick and Amy Kitchen have run it since 2013. Eight acres of certified organic veg, heritage pigs out on pasture, and chickens with Cusco standing guard. He takes it seriously.
Let's be honest about why people actually go. It's the vegetables. Mid-August is peak harvest and the farm store is where the best of it lands. Farm eggs and pasture-raised chicken and pork round it out.
The store also sneaks in a small local grocery. Cheese, bread, honey, maple syrup, and by at least one account, a great big cookie. Grab a bouquet on the way out. They run until frost.
One catch: it's only open Thursday to Saturday. Plan-your-week stop, not a Sunday-drive whim.
The fields are closed to visitors, so the store is the whole show. Turns out that's plenty.
