Morning. Mother's Day is Sunday. If you don't have a plan yet, this is your warning.

This week we've got a Kincardine fish and chip spot named after a boat that exploded off the coast in 1883, a goat farm near Wiarton where you can bottle feed a baby kid, and a stack of events that should help you look like you had a plan all along.

Let's get into it.

Mother's Day Weekend — Saturday-Sunday, May 9-10 | Across Grey-Bruce

It's Mother's Day weekend and the calendar is stacked. Brunches at Cobble Beach, Southampton Golf Club, and Match Eatery in Hanover. A Mother's Day Tea at the Walker House Museum in Kincardine. A Mother's Day hike at Keefer Falls. Mug-making at the Markdale library. Pizza and wine at Coffin Ridge.

We've got the full rundown in this week's Community Calendar.

The Great Canadian Dueling Pianos — Friday, May 8 | 7:30 PM-11 PM | The Carriage House Event Center, Hanover

Two pianos, two players, and a request list driven entirely by the room. The Hanover Curling Club is throwing this one as their big spring fundraiser. Bring a group, bring some cash for song requests, and plan to be sore from laughing the next morning.

Brett Kissel: Dirt Road Revival Tour — Saturday, May 9 | 7:30 PM | Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre, Owen Sound

A proper country show in Owen Sound. Brett Kissel is bringing his Beautiful Country Tour to the Bayshore, with Robyn Ottolini, Sully Burrows, and Bradley Hale on the bill. The kind of lineup that
doesn't usually swing through this far north.

Westside Nurseries & Greenhouses — Owen Sound

If you grew up in Grey County, you've probably been to Westside at some point. Maybe with your mom. Maybe for a tomato plant, a spruce, or one of those Christmas wreaths.

They've been at it since 1964. Same family, three generations in, just past sixty years on the same Owen Sound property.

What started as a small operation has grown into one of the bigger garden centres in the region. Trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, water gardens, patio furniture, statues, fountains, the works. They grow a lot of what they sell, and the staff actually know the difference between a clematis and a climbing hydrangea.

It's spring. The greenhouses are open. The hanging baskets are loaded. And if you're stuck on a Mother's Day idea, a flat of perennials and an afternoon in the garden together is pretty hard to
beat.

Community Calendar

Our Community Calendar covers Grey & Bruce Counties. It’s a large area, so if we missed an event we are sorry, we will do better next time!

Our Community Calendar was getting a bit too enthusiastic. Turns out stuffing a week’s worth of local fun into one email makes for a very long scroll.

So we’ve given it its own space! Click the button below to check out the full lineup of events this week.

Foodie Flash

Erie Belle Restaurant — Kincardine

There's a fish and chip shop on Kincardine's harbour named after a tugboat that exploded just off the coast in 1883.

The original Erie Belle was built in Cleveland in 1862. On November 21, 1883, she steamed out of Kincardine to rescue a stranded schooner. Her boiler exploded. Four of the twelve crew died. The exploded boiler is still there, sitting as a memorial about two miles south of town, looking out over Lake Huron.

The restaurant has been carrying the name for over 35 years. The Edey family took it over in 2018 and didn't mess with the formula. Traditional English-style fish and chips, fresh-cut chips, coleslaw and mushy peas on the side, local craft beer on tap.

The fish is fresh. The batter's right. The room looks straight out at the water.

It's the kind of spot where you sit down, order without thinking too hard, and let the lake do the rest.

Open Wednesday through Sunday, noon to 8pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

259 Harbour St, Kincardine.

Hidden Gem of the week

Farm on the Lake — Wiarton (ish)

There's a farm just outside Wiarton where you can bottle feed a baby goat this month.

Farm on the Lake sits on the Bruce Peninsula near Georgian Bluffs, on a property with hundred-year-old maples and a private lake. It's family-run. The owners started with zero farming experience about a decade ago, figured it out, and now they consult other farmers on how to do it themselves.

This is the part of the year you will want to go.

Goat Mountain runs all day. Grab a bundle of hay and watch the babies climb and parade around while their moms stretch their necks for snacks. Kid Village is the enclosed pen where you go in, pet them, play with them, and chase a few kids around the yard. The bottle feeding session is the
headline. Hands on a baby goat, barn tour included, and they're booking those for May through July right now.

If you want to make a weekend of it, they've got glamping and camping on the property. Kayaks, paddle boards, and hiking trails all on site.

Open daily 9am to 9pm. Booking required for the bottle feeding.
