Morning. Summerβs officially over and Grey-Bruce has gone full fall fair. Five of them this week, including Mildmayβs 161st, and Gordon Lightfootβs band at the Roxy.
This weekβs Buzz is brought to you by Grey Bruce Live. They put local musicians on a real stage, one iconic album per show, front to back. First up is Led Zeppelin IV on November 20 at Victoria Jubilee Hall in Walkerton. $30, cash only, and the list of where to grab one is on their site.
Weβre also starting something today. A holiday guide to the little shops worth pulling over for, built from your favourite shops. Details a few scrolls down.
Inside: a barn the Mennonites built with wooden pins, two demolition derbies on one Saturday, a Tobermory table you can finally get, and 500 RV sites with the power on.
Letβs get into it.

Top 3 this week
Here are our 3 favourite events happening this week

Two demolition derbies on the same Saturday, and a downtown handed over to artists in between.
Owen Sound Fall Fair β Thursday-Saturday, September 10-12 | Victoria Park, Owen Sound
Number 174. Thursday eases in at 4 PM, Friday brings the truck pulls after dark, and Saturday goes the full nine: horse show at 9, antique tractor pull, 4-H beef and sheep, the quilt exhibition in the arena, and the midway running all day. Then the demolition derby takes the track at 7 PM. Day pass is $15, kids 5 to 13 are $10, under 5 walk in free, and a family pass is $25.
Kincardine Art Crawl β Friday-Sunday, September 11-13 | Downtown Kincardine
For one weekend the whole downtown turns into a gallery. Saturday is the day to go: the Arts Alive Market fills Victoria Park and Creatorβs Alley takes over Bankerβs Alley, both 10 AM to 4 PM, with demonstrations, makers and music in between. The finale is the Live Art Battle at The Bruce from 5 to 8, where local artists go head to head on blank canvases with a clock running. Most of the weekend is free, and the workshops that arenβt run $30 to $40.
161st Mildmay-Carrick Fall Fair β Friday-Sunday, September 11-13 | Mildmay-Carrick Recreation Complex, Mildmay
The theme is βGo Hog Wild,β and the weekend earns it. Friday night is the Ambassador pageant and official opening at 7:30, with the fire department serving chicken wings after ($5 adults, $3 students, $15 a family). Saturday is free: the kidsβ parade at 11, pet show at 11:30, Dave and The Retros in the pavilion from 1, and the demolition derby behind the cattle barns at 2:30. Stick around for the Fall Fair Dance at 9 with the Bronson Line Band, $5 at the door. Sunday is free too, with an axe-throwing trailer and climbing wall from 11, horseshoes and cornhole at noon, the chicken barbecue from 4 ($20, get tickets ahead), and the live auction at 6:30.

Ballagh Handcrafted

Somewhere in your kitchen thereβs a cutting board you bought in a hurry. Mike Ballagh makes the other kind.
Ballagh Handcrafted is one guy and a shop full of maple, walnut and cherry. Butcher blocks built to take a beating, hand-turned bowls where the grain does the decorating, epoxy boards, clocks, coasters. Heβll also cast your wedding flowers into a board youβll use every week instead of a box youβll never open.
Everything is custom. The size, the wood, the space it has to fit. Tell him what youβre picturing and he builds that, not the closest thing on a shelf.
Fair warning on the calendar. Handmade takes time, and if a board or a bowl is on your Christmas list for someone, September is when to ask. Not December.
The Buzz Shop Small Guide
That little shop you always pull over for. We want it.
Weβre building a holiday shopping guide, and we need your help. The kind of list that saves you the drive to the city and gives the delivery driver a day off. Not the big box stores. The general store with the hand-painted sign, the one-room makerβs shop, the place on the highway you always mean to stop at and finally did.
It doesnβt have to be in Grey-Bruce. Close enough to be worth the drive works this time. Tell us the shop, the town, and what youβre stopping there to buy. Takes about thirty seconds.
Independents only, and they have to be open now. No βthere used to be a great place in 2014.β

Community Calendar
Our Community Calendar covers Grey & Bruce Counties. Itβs a large area, so if we missed an event we are sorry, we will do better next time!

509 events across Grey and Bruce this week. Five fall fairs in four days, downtown Kincardine handed over to artists, Gordon Lightfootβs band at the Roxy, and a clogging championship in Dundalk. Plus the usual pile of markets, legion meat draws and library programs in between.
It all lives on the map. Open it, find your town, tap a pin, see whatβs close. Same events, way less scrolling.
3 more worth getting off the couch for:
Beaver Valley Fall Fair β Thornbury, Fri-Sat Sept 11-12. Year 154. Saturday at 1 PM thereβs an apple peeling competition and a medieval combat demo, running at the same time.
The Lightfoot Band β Owen Sound, Fri Sept 11, 7:30 PM. The musicians who played on Gordonβs records and toured with him for decades, doing the hits plus deep cuts at the Roxy.
Pizza on the Farm β Lucknow, Sat Sept 12, 4-8 PM. Wood-fired pizza and farm salads at Grassroots, live music every Saturday, no reservations taken.
Foodie Flash
Tobermory Brewing Co. & Grill - Tobermory

Thereβs a brewery in Tobermory where the whitefish is out of Georgian Bay and the barbecue sauce starts as their own dark ale. For the next few weeks, you can actually get a table.
Thatβs Tobermory Brewing Co. & Grill on Bay Street. All summer itβs the busiest room in town, full of people killing time before a ferry or coming in off a boat. Then Labour Day passes, Highway 6 empties out, and it goes back to being a good kitchen with a backyard patio and string lights.
Start with the dish people keep coming back to. The seafood linguine: mussels, prawns and scallops in a creamy rosΓ© sauce, with garlic focaccia for whateverβs left in the bowl.
The whitefish dinner is the one the menu puts a crown on. Local Georgian Bay whitefish, pan-seared, beurre blanc, roasted mini potatoes. And the baby back ribs come basted in a house barbecue sauce made with their own Dark Ale, which is the most brewery thing on the menu.
The beer isnβt made in that building anymore. They started in 2014, brewed on site until 2018, then got popular enough to need a bigger place.
Live music runs Friday and Saturday nights out on the patio. Bring a sweater. Itβs September on the Peninsula and the sun quits earlier than you expect.
The lineups come back in May.
Hidden Gem of the week
The Utopia Market - Feversham

On Grey Road 2 outside Feversham thereβs a 7,600 square foot barn that is put together with wooden pins and dowels, and it just turned one.
Thatβs The Utopia Market. Sandy and Jamie Gott have farmed in Grey Highlands for generations, and this barn is where they finally started selling their own food straight to the people eating it. Hemlock beams, built to look like the 1920s, and a lot bigger inside than the road lets on.
Start at the butcher counter. Their own grass-fed Black Angus, plus lamb, chicken and pork. The bakery turns out sourdough and fresh bread daily. The produce comes off their own certified organic ground, heirloom tomatoes and peppers from the hoop houses, radishes from the greenhouse. Thereβs an espresso bar and a cafΓ© if you want to sit for a while.
Heads up: theyβre closed Tuesdays. The morning this lands is the one day not to drive out.
Go Saturday instead. Fill a cooler, get a coffee, take Grey Road 2 slow on the way home.

Road to the Plowing Match
Pack the camper and make a week of it

Two weeks out. The International Plowing Match & Rural Expo runs September 22 to 26 on a farm five kilometres west of Walkerton, and this yearβs pitch is simple. Donβt drive it five days running. Move in.
The RV park sits within walking distance of Tented City. Five hundred serviced sites, 30 by 50 feet each, every one with hydro, courtesy of Bruce Power. Water fill for your trailer is free. Non-serviced sites are available too.
Each site comes with two wristbands, good for all five days plus the evening shows. And the evenings are the reason to stay over: the Mudmen are on the bill, and the park has its own music tent at night, so the entertainment doesnβt stop when the gates do. Book through Letβs Camp, and set up an account first because youβll need one. The serviced sites go first.
And one last money note, because today is the day. Advance tickets are $20 for adults until 11:59 tonight, then they go to $25. Kids 6 to 15 are $5, and the family pack, two adults and two kids, is $40 online only.
