Morning. The Plowing Match packed up Saturday, and the pumpkins moved right in behind it.
This week's Buzz is brought to you by Stay Grey Bruce. Thanksgiving is two weekends out, and if the whole family's coming home and the house won't hold them, there's a filter for cottages and chalets that sleep 12 or more. Booked straight with the owners, and there's a pet-friendly filter so the dog gets a spot too.
Inside: a giant pumpkin weigh-off in Port Elgin, 200 scarecrows in Meaford, an Owen Sound park inn that's been serving lunch since 1915, and a brand-new farm where the goats faint.
Let's get into it.

Top 3 this week
Here are our 3 favourite events happening this week

Giant pumpkins, 200 scarecrows, and a free art crawl right as the colours hit. Fall showed up all at once.
Port Elgin Pumpkinfest — Saturday-Sunday, October 3-4 | Sat 9 AM-6 PM, Sun 10 AM-4 PM | Downtown Port Elgin
Forty-one years of Port Elgin weighing pumpkins you need a forklift to move. The site record is 1,966.5 pounds, set in 2024, and there are two official weigh-offs this weekend, one each day. Add a car show, a midway and a Saturday night party in the Patch. It kicks off Friday night with a free pub-crawl shuttle between Port Elgin and Southampton. $12 at the gate, $10 if you grab a wristband ahead.
Meaford Scarecrow Invasion — Friday, October 2 | Parade 6 PM, festival 6:30-8:30 PM | Sykes Street & Rotary Harbour Pavilion, Meaford
Back in 1996, the owners of Meaford's Stedman's store came up with scarecrows as a way to get people wandering downtown. Thirty years later, around 200 of them have taken over the town and the countryside. Friday's parade rolls down Sykes Street at 6, then it's music, food and free kids' activities at the harbour. Make a weekend of it: the Apple Harvest Craft Show packs about 200 makers into the community centre Saturday and Sunday.
Autumn Leaves Studio Tour — Friday-Sunday, October 2-4 | 10 AM-5 PM | Studios across Grey and Bruce
A free, self-guided drive between artists' studios, timed right as the colours turn. Grab the map, pick a direction, and pull in wherever the sign's out. The person who made the thing is usually the one standing there. It's always the weekend before Thanksgiving, which makes it a sneaky head start on the gift list.
Partner Spotlight
Grey Bruce Live

Led Zeppelin IV has eight songs on it. Most people could hum four.
On November 20, local musicians are playing all eight, in order, at Walkerton's Victoria Jubilee Hall. Black Dog to open. When the Levee Breaks to close. Stairway to Heaven right in the middle, where it belongs. And yes, somebody has to learn the mandolin part on The Battle of Evermore.
That's the whole idea behind Grey Bruce Live: take a classic album, hand it to Grey-Bruce musicians, and put them on a real stage.
Tickets are $30, cash only, sold in person at four spots in Walkerton and one in Mildmay.
The Buzz Shop Small Guide

That's a wrap on nominations. More than 170 of you sent in the little shops you always pull over for, and we're sorting every one of them by town right now.
The full Buzz Shop Small Guide lands in your inbox next Tuesday. Perfect timing for the Thanksgiving weekend drive. Keep an eye out.

Community Calendar
Our Community Calendar covers Grey & Bruce Counties. It's a large area, so if we missed an event we are sorry, we will do better next time!

579 events across Grey and Bruce this week. Pumpkinfest, scarecrows in Meaford, the Tiverton Fall Fair, Bruce Trail Day hikes up and down the escarpment, and the Owen Sound Legion's 100th birthday party. Wednesday is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, with gatherings at Cape Croker Park and at Kelso Beach in Owen Sound. And with the municipal election on October 26, there's an all-candidates meeting in just about every town.
It all lives on the map. Open it, find your town, tap a pin, see what's close. Same events, way less scrolling.
3 more worth getting off the couch for:
Tiverton Fall Fair — Tiverton, Fri-Sun Oct 2-4. A pie and cake auction Friday night, chicken bingo Saturday, and a truck and tractor pull Sunday at 12:30.
Bahamas at Meaford Hall — Meaford, Fri Oct 2, 7:30 PM. Bahamas brings the Industrial Sport & Sound Tour to Meaford Hall. About $93.
Bruce Trail Day — Up and down the trail, Sun Oct 4. Free guided hikes from the Bruce Trail clubs. The Peninsula club's hub at Ferndale runs 11 to 2, with scone dogs.
Foodie Flash
Harrison Park Inn - Owen Sound

There's been an inn serving lunch in the middle of Owen Sound's Harrison Park since 1915.
It opened as the park pavilion, built for less than $1,600. The original burned in 1985 and a new one went up in its place, with a stone fireplace, vaulted wood ceilings and windows on three sides looking into the trees.
In 2021 the keys went to Dave Porter, who started out at the take-out window as a high school kid. That window's still open, all year.
Two things people order over and over. The burgers, six ounces and made from scratch. Get the Park Burger, with cheddar and two strips of bacon. And the fish and chips, cod with homemade coleslaw. Save room for a Snowball: vanilla ice cream, deep-fried, buried in chocolate sauce and whipped cream. The menu calls it famous. We're not going to argue.
The salmon run up the Sydenham usually goes mid-September to mid-October, the park sits right on the river, and the trails out back link to Inglis Falls.
Watch the salmon, then go get a burger.

Quick hits from around Grey-Bruce
Armani gets along with everybody
Meet Armani, a 7-year-old Argentinian Dogo cross at the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter near Owen Sound. The shelter's write-up on her is short: very sweet, good with dogs, people and cats. That's about as easy a match as it gets. She's spayed and vaccinated. It's a volunteer-run, no-kill shelter, and adoptions start with a visit. Call 519-372-1911.
Pick your ice fishing lake before it freezes
Stocked answers one question: was it stocked? Search any Ontario lake and see every fish the MNRF has put in since 1905. For winter planning, it flags lakes that got big stockings in 2021 to 2023, where those fish should be catchable size this season. Free alerts email you when your lake shows up in new stocking data.

Hidden Gem of the week
Redneck Ranch - Allenford Road

Out on Allenford Road, between Allenford and Sauble Beach, there's a brand-new farm where the goats are a little dramatic.
That's Redneck Ranch. Jeff and Heather Thomas opened it to visitors this summer. There's a pick-your-own garden, hens and ducks, a corn maze, and a pumpkin patch that's ready right now. Two baby goats, Bambi and Thumper, arrived in July "in slightly dramatic fashion."
But let's be honest about why people really go. The fainting goats. It's a real breed. When they get a fright, their muscles lock up for a few seconds and sometimes they tip right over. They're fine. They just commit to the bit. A few times a morning, the Thomases take visitors in to feed, pet and brush the whole crew, and reviewers keep calling the family lovely and welcoming.
Saturdays, the Barnside Caf-EH opens. It's run by Ellie, a young entrepreneur who makes the lemonade, iced coffee and treats herself, and who also holds the title of official Ranch greeter.
One planning note: fall hours are Thursdays and Saturdays only, 10 to 1, through October 31. Go Saturday so you get the lemonade.
The corn maze is five bucks. The goats will take whatever you're handing out.
