Morning. Halloween is Saturday, and Grey-Bruce is going all in. The clocks fall back Sunday too, so you get an extra hour of sleep to recover.

Inside: soup and chili at Thornbury's century-old bakery, a Neustadt candle shop that started in a farmhouse kitchen, and zombies at the museum.

Let's get into it.

Top 3 this week

Here are our 3 favourite events happening this week

Zombies at a museum, 61 shops handing out candy, and a beach lined with jack-o'-lanterns the night after Halloween.

Fright Night: Dawn of the Dead — Thursday, October 29 | 6:30-10 PM | Grey Roots Museum, Owen Sound

A zombie movie in a museum. Grey Roots is screening the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake at 7:30, with a cash bar, popcorn and the exhibits open before the show. It's rated R, so leave the little ones home. $10.50, or $8.50 for seniors and students.

Meaford Trick or Treat Trail — Saturday, October 31 | All day, while the candy lasts | Downtown Meaford

Sixty-one downtown spots are handing out treats on Halloween, from the library and the museum to Meaford Hall. It runs all day until the candy's gone, but every shop keeps its own hours, so go early for the best haul.

Lion's Head Pumpkin Parade — Sunday, November 1 | 5:30-6:30 PM | Lion's Head Beach Pavilion

Don't toss your jack-o'-lantern yet. Bring it to the beach, any size or shape, and volunteers will light it and line it up along the path to the Memorial Garden. It's the 7th year, it's pet friendly, and it goes rain or shine. The clocks fall back that morning, so it'll be good and dark.

Partner Spotlight

Mildmay's Hanging of the Green

On Friday, November 27, Mildmay turns into a Christmas village for one night. It's the night the whole town turns its Christmas lights on for the first time, the big display at the Rotary Park included. Here's how to do it right.

Start at the Bavarian Market. It opens at 5:30 in the Harley's Pub & Perk parking lot, with local vendors set up under the lights.

Then grab a free hot apple cider from the Chamber crew as you wander down main street, popping into the shops as you go. When you get hungry, grab sausage and kraut from the Rotary Club and fries from the firefighters. Cold fingers? Their fire pits are right there.

Got little ones? Find Santa on main street before the parade and get those requests in early.

At 7:40, the parade sets off across from Rotary Park and rolls up main street to the Freshmart. Grab a spot on the curb, and keep your mitts on.

Got a float or something to sell? The Chamber is taking parade and market sign-ups now.

Community Calendar

Our Community Calendar covers Grey & Bruce Counties. It's a large area, so if we missed an event we are sorry, we will do better next time!

697 events this week, and most of them want you in costume. Trick-or-treat trails hit Owen Sound's River District Saturday morning and Chatsworth Saturday afternoon, Sauble Beach has a trick-or-treat night at the community centre, and the grown-ups get costume parties from Blue Mountain to Tiverton.

It all lives on the map. Open it, find your town, tap a pin, see what's close. Same events, way less scrolling.

3 more worth getting off the couch for:

Hanover's Trick or Treat Trail — Hanover, Fri, 3:30-5 PM. 10th Street closes from the police cruiser at 7th Ave to the fire truck at 13th. For kids 14 and under.

Casper at Meaford Hall — Meaford, Fri, 6 PM. The friendly ghost on the big screen, rated PG. $10, and seats are first come.

Owen Sound Attack vs Windsor Spitfires — Owen Sound, Sat, 2 PM. A Halloween matinee at the Bayshore, and you're home in time for trick-or-treating.

Foodie Flash

Thornbury Bakery Café - Thornbury

There's a bakery on Thornbury's main street that's been feeding the town since around 1901.

It made its name on Chelsea buns, cinnamon buns and butter tarts. The bakers still start in the middle of the night and make everything from scratch, seven days a week.

Now that it's cold out, look past the pastry case for a minute. There's a house-made soup every day, with a meat and a veggie option. The beef chili comes topped with cheddar and sour cream, with buttered bread on the side. Or get a slice of quiche with soup. Breakfast runs all day too.

Grab a piece of the Red Prince apple pie on the way out. And if you want to work it off first, the bakery's 15 km Sticky Bun Loop starts and ends at its door.

King is a big softie who's great with kids

Meet King, a 3-year-old Argentinian Dogo at the Grey Bruce Animal Shelter. He's friendly, good with kids and cats, and picky about other dogs. He has a long-term condition that's managed with medication, and the shelter recommends big-dog experience. He'll be vet-checked, neutered and vaccinated before he goes home. Call 519-372-1911 to book a visit.

Hosting Christmas this year?

If the whole family's coming and your house tops out at eight, there's a 7-bedroom inn in Eugenia on Stay Grey Bruce that sleeps 13. The dining table seats 10, there's a chef's kitchen and a wood stove, and Eugenia Falls is a five-minute walk for the post-turkey stroll. You book it straight with the owners, no booking fees.

Hidden Gem of the week

Dusty Road Candle Co. - Neustadt

In 2021, Laura started pouring candles in her farmhouse kitchen. Now there's a little shop on Mill Street in Neustadt with her name on every jar.

It's still a one-woman show. Laura pours the candles, packs the orders and runs the counter. Along with jar candles there are wax melts, room sprays, refills and dough bowls, the big wooden bowls packed with wax that readers keep raving about.

This is a good week to go. The pumpkin and harvest scents are on clearance to make room, and the Christmas lineup is rolling out one scent at a time. North Pole is back. She's posting the rest as a guessing game, so you can play along before you drive over.

Fair warning: shop hours are afternoons, and it's closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
